Modern Power System Protection in Smart Grid presents the challenges of modernizing power system protection and solutions through emerging technologies. Recent demand for decarbonization and reduction in use of fossil fuels has resulted in increased interest in systems such as microgrids, smart grid technologies, and distributed generation resources. These new technologies have new challenges. Chapters explain challenges such as bi-directional fault current, false trip, unsynchronous reclosing, islanding detection, and stability issues due to the smaller inertia of distributed generation. AC/DC/hybrid microgrid protection challenges such as low fault current in island mode and change of fault currents in two modes of operation are also examined. Solutions including HVDC protection, machine learning, wide area special protection, wide area fault location, adaptive schemes in transmission and distribution networks, cyber security, AI driven methods, and digital twin application are presented. Additionally, case studies analytical tools, examples, formulations, and flowcharts are included to demonstrate the practical application of these solutions.
